How do I find train schedules to and from Tauernhof?
- German Railway: www.bahn.de
- Austrian Railway: www.oebb.at
When you are there, click 'English' at the top of the screen.
I have additional travel plans. What do you advise?
Is it possible to send luggage to be stored at Tauernhof before I arrive and to store luggage at Tauernhof if I go travelling after Bible School/Upward Bound?
If I stay for only three months in Austria, do I need a Visa?
Do I need a visa if I plan to stay longer than 3 months in Austria or travel to other countries within Europe?
We can help you to apply for a student visa in Austria once you are here (and this will allow you to remain in Europe for 12 months from the date of application). A student visa costs 120 Euros (which can be paid in cash or credit card) and you will also need the following:
- valid passport
- valid medical insurance for the duration of your stay
- passport photo from a photo shop in Schladming (as it has to be authenticated locally)
What should I bring to Tauernhof?
Clothing: Located in the Austrian Alps, Tauernhof experiences a typical temperate and mountain climate, with a fair degree of temperature variation and precipitation. Therefore you should bring some warm clothing for both indoors and outdoors. We suggest that you bring easy-care clothes that may be put in a dryer. You can label your clothes for easier identification. Our dress standards require students to maintain a general neatness in appearance. Neat clothing should be worn for lectures, meals, outreaches, and other activities.
For meetings and meals on Sundays, students are expected to dress up appropriately (e.g. men could wear a suit or jacket and tie). Bring along some clothes suitable for practical work, both outdoors and indoors. For the fitness plan and recreation you should also bring running shoes, shorts, and a swim suit and hiking boots if wanted. A bathrobe and slippers are also advisable.
Other: You must have a good English Bible (a translation such as NASB, NIV, NKJV or similar, not a paraphrase) as well as pens for lecture notes and assignments - a notebook and paper are provided. Tauernhof has concordances, commentaries and Bible dictionaries). You can also bring your personal PC-notebook/laptop for taking notes during lectures. Also be sure to bring towels and toiletries (bedding is provided). Please note that the electrical current in Austria is 220 Volts A.C. Therefore if you intend to bring any electrical appliances, you may need to bring a voltage converter as well as an adaptor plug. Please note as well that radios, CD players, and MP3's may only be used with headphones. We encourage you to bring along any portable musical instrument that you play.

What is the best way to pay the Bible School/Upward Bound fees?
For those living outside of the European Union...
The easiest way is by credit card - just send an email to the registrar with your long card number and expiry date and we will process the payment for you. Please note that a 2% charge will be made by our credit card machine provider.
Alternatively, you can make an international bank transfer or send a certified cashiers check in Euros. If you are unsure of how to do an international bank transfer, please go to your bank in person and they will normally be able to help you. Please ensure that you tell your bank that you wish to pay the bank charges in Austria as well as in your home country - this will save time and further expense once you arrive here as the bank in Austria always makes a deduction of around 20 Euros. Please also note that if you pay by check, a €12 fee will be deducted from our bank and so we would kindly ask you to increase the amount of your check by €12 to save time and further expense once you arrive.
What exactly is included in the student fee?
- Lodging and meals
- Email/Internet access
- Laundry and detergent
- all books and a binder
- use of Tauernhof sports equipment for organized activities
Not included in the tuition and fees are:
- The residency visa for students not from the European union (€120)
- Health and accident insurance during Bible school
- Postage and telephone calls
- Travel expenses
- Outings on Saturdays
- Fees for sport facilities outside Tauernhof (swimming pool etc.)
What is the best way to access my money in Austria?
The easiest way to get money is to use your bank/debit/credit card and withdraw the money from a nearby ATM (less than 1 minute walk from Tauernhof).
Are there shops nearby to buy groceries and toiletries?
How much pocket money do I need to bring?
Generally, you will need money for any travelling you do outside of school or during the travel weekend (it is also possible to stay at Tauernhof for free during this weekend). Of course, any skiing or other such activities require an appropriate amount of money. So...in many ways, it is up to you!
Do I need medical insurance as a student? How does it work?
For those outside of the EU:
In Austria you normally pay the bill immediately in cash and then hand the receipt in to your insurance company and they will pay you back.
What happens if I am sick and need to visit a doctor?
Will I have internet access at Tauernhof?
If you don´t have a Laptop, you can use our student PC´s.
What does a normal week look like for a student?
During the week, students have classes in the morning and some evenings. Afternoons and evenings after lectures are free for study, sports, outreaches, trips, socializing, duties etc. Students also meet during the week for family groups and various other activities. On Friday night we offer a social event which is organized by students and staff.
During the week, students normally have 3 classes from 9.20 - 12.20. On Monday evening, Wednesday evening and Thursday evening there is normally 1 lecture from 19.45 - 20.35.
Saturdays are free. We organize every Saturday outings for our students in which they are free to participate in (extra costs involved for transportation, admission fees etc.).
Are alcohol and tobacco permitted?
Can I do my laundry during my time there?
What do I need to know about using my electrical devices?
Do I need to have any knowledge of German to come to Tauernhof for Bible School?
